The Good Ol' Days..........
Waxhaw was still a sleepy little town when I moved here in 1978. The town didn’t have a traffic light. There was no need for one. There was very little traffic. It had been a thriving cotton town back in the 1930’s (or so I’ve been told). There was a train station across from the hotel (now a private residence). In the 70’s & 80’s it changed into a town filled with antique stores.

I'm from a small town in southeastern Tennessee.  Even though my hometown has grown quite a lot, it still has the small town feel.  I like that.  It is a great hometown and I hope to move back at some point (sooner rather than later).

After relocating to several different areas for the company I was employed with, we ended up in Charlotte, NC in 1976.  We eventually bought a small existing home in downtown Waxhaw, NC, just outside of Charlotte.  At that time, it was an easy drive into Charlotte or Monroe. There was very little traffic on Providence Road. New homes were few and far between. The town was filled with antique stores, a restaurant or two, one small hardware store, Broome’s Barber Shop (proprietor, Wade Broome since 1948) now owned by Kathy.  The mayor at the time, Simon Rogers, had a small grocery store at the edge of town. It pretty much stayed the quite, sleepy, lazy, relaxing little town (except when the train comes through) until the mid 90’s

Waxhaw is located in Union County and the county seat is Monroe, NC, but most of our growth is spurred by what goes on in Charlotte. Basically, we are a bedroom community of Charlotte.  Today, the antique stores are mostly gone (some are now restaurants), the hardware store is much larger and Lowe’s has moved in.   The small grocery store is a tanning salon and new homes and new subdivisions are going up all around. The barbershop is still here and looks much the same as it did when Wade ran it. It’s now a three-chair shop. We have two supermarkets and a Target has opened in Wesley Chapel (about 5 miles away).  Waxhaw still has a small town feel, but not like before.

In 1996, I was licensed in real estate and have been selling homes since.  Most of my business is in the re-sale market, but I do sell new homes too.  With the current economy, real estate sales have been hit hard,  but sales have picked up a bit in the past few months.

I guess things can’t always stay the same, but sometimes I look back, think of the simpler, quieter times, and wonder…  I’m starting to sound like my parents?  Is that what they called “back in the good old days”?
